What is the difference between 18k, 21k and 24k gold?

Karat measures how many parts out of 24 are pure gold. 24k is almost pure (99.9%), 21k contains 87.5% gold, and 18k contains 75% gold with other metals that make it harder. That is why 21k costs more per gram than 18k, while 18k is more common in everyday jewellery because it is stronger and scratches less easily.

How is the gold price set in Libya?

The local gold price depends mainly on two things: the global price of an ounce of gold in dollars, and the dollar rate on Libya's parallel market. When the dollar rises against the dinar, the dinar price of a gram of gold rises even if the global price is flat, and vice versa.

Dealers also add a margin that varies with local supply, demand and import costs, so the price can differ slightly from one shop to another.

What is worked gold and why does it cost more?

Worked gold is gold that has been made into finished jewellery. Its price per gram is higher than raw or scrap gold of the same karat because it includes part of the cost of manufacture and design. When you sell, gold is usually valued at the raw price minus the making charge, so the selling price is lower than the buying price.

Tips when buying or selling gold

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of 21k gold per gram in Libya today?

The 21k price per gram is shown at the top of this page in Libyan dinars and is updated whenever we receive a new market price.

Why does gold get more expensive in Libya when the dollar rises?

Gold is priced globally in dollars, so a stronger dollar against the dinar means buying the same amount of gold takes more dinars.

Is the gold price shown a buying or selling price?

The prices are indicative market prices per gram. Selling to a shop usually gets you slightly less than buying from it because of the making charge and the dealer's margin.
